What’s going on around here?

Well, here we are coming up on the end of February already.  Just thought I’d throw a quick update out there of current happenings.  First up, for those of you near Seattle I will be playing a short solo electric guitar set on March 18th at the Blue Moon Tavern, (Wallingford/UW area of Seattle), 9pm.  I haven’t performed live in awhile, so it’s time to get out there and make some noise.  If you have the time, I would love to see you.  There will be other bands playing after me, most notably my friends band called The Rule of Groove they are an instrumental music trio with a fun funky vibe.  It will be a good time. UPDATE: I just found out there is a cover charge of $7 for this event.  I usually try to play venues that are free of charge but I guess that is not the case this time around.  Sorry!!   In other news, I’m still wrapped up in mixing two songs.  One is being done by me, (which is probably why it’s taking so long haha) I’m new at this mixing thing.  I can only do a little at a time then I have to put it away and wait 24-48 hours for the fresh ears to come back, otherwise I have noticed it’s very easy to get carried away, over tweak things and end up doing more harm than good!  The other song is waiting to be mixed by a good friend with much more mix experience than I will ever have.  But he is away in Nashville getting paid lots of money to make a record at the moment so that’s where it sits for now.  As I patiently wait my turn I have had new song ideas spinning through my head.  The music never stops its always there, time to start writing again. 🙂

Hey Violet, My new EP isn’t up online yet, I will send you a link via your Facebook messenger once it’s up. Hopefully by this weekend. It’s a vocal goth techno recording of new and re written music from the 90’s, so it may not be your cup of tea. Ironically, all the music was written on acoustic guitar and luckily can be performed live, now all I have to do is find a way to do my hair like Robert Smith from The Cure and I should be good to go …..lol… Overall, it doesn’t really represent where I am currently emotionally or musically , but needed to be recorded to be preserved. I think one of your best qualities as a musician and composer is your attention to detail, it is lacking in a lot of musicians these days. It can be funny how mixing and panning something completely different can totally change a song. When you mix are you doing your own EQ as well ? EQ can be a challenge because if your not careful you can add extra noise to the recording but if you don’t EQ it may sound flat. Have a great performance at Woodland Park it should be a great way to warm up for the Blue Moon, also the Ould Triangle on Greenwood avenue allows 30 minute sets at their Tuesday open mic, so it may be another chance to practice for your Blue Moon show. Catch you another time – Jeremy

Hey Violet, I’m glad to hear you are starting to do some of your own mixing, in the long run that will give you more control over creating your unique sound. Mastering is a whole different ballgame though, it can be really hard to know how it’s going to sound on cd. I do my own mastering at home, but it’s very limiting , and never could equal what the professionals do in a big studio. Music of course can always be remastered, so if the money was there, a better studio could take it to the next level. I just got done with a new 5 song EP, it was a nightmare to mix and master, what should of taken a weekend took a month, I am so glad to be done with it ….lol…. Hope you have a great show at the Blue Moon …. I will be in Florida during March, so I won’t be able to attend. Overall, don’t feel bad about playing a place with a cover charge, you deserve to get paid something, although cover charge means you won’t be getting paid much ….lol….. I have been through that before ….lol….. Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, Congrats on the new EP, that’s great I’ll have to head over to your site and give it a listen. I was chipping away at the mix again tonight, every time I work on it, I hear improvements. I think when I start noticing diminishing returns on the improvements I am making I will call it done, but I can be a bit of a “detail” oriented nut, so that is my challenge, to know when to just stop! I won’t be doing the mastering myself, luckily I only have one song to do at the moment so it should be affordable to hire a mastering engineer for that but I hear ya on doing what you can at home, in this day and age it just makes sense for a lot of artists I think. Have a good time in Florida, I bet that will feel like a sunny summer vacation compared to WA this time of year. I guess that means I won’t be seeing you at the Woodland Park open mic. I’m finally gonna get out to that this month, with my guitar! I’m gonna play 2 songs from my Blue Moon Tavern set. I guess I’ll catch you another time. Take care, Violet
